1. Clean the Lint Screen After EVERY Single Load
Cleaning the mesh lint screen before or after every drying cycle is the single most important maintenance habit. A clogged lint screen restricts airflow by up to 75%, forcing the heating element to run at extreme temperatures and increasing drying times significantly. Pull out the screen, roll off the lint with your fingers, and rinse it under warm water monthly to remove invisible fabric softener wax residue.
2. Deep Clean Condenser Heat Exchanger Units (Condenser Dryers)
If you own a condenser or heat pump tumble dryer, the metal heat exchanger located in the bottom compartment collects fine wet lint that bypasses the primary filter. Remove the heat exchanger cartridge every 4 to 6 weeks and wash it thoroughly under a showerhead to flush out trapped lint from between the aluminum cooling fins.
3. Inspect & Vacuum the Exhaust Vent Duct (Vented Dryers)
Vented dryers expel moist air through a flexible duct to the outside. Over time, lint accumulates inside the corrugated ductwork, creating a major fire hazard. Inspect the duct annually, ensure it isn't crushed behind the machine, and use a specialized dryer vent brush kit to clear all internal lint deposits.
4. Avoid Overloading the Dryer Drum
Stuffing the drum full of heavy wet towels places immense strain on the drive belt, motor start capacitor, and drum support rollers. Clothes need room to tumble freely so heated air can circulate through the fabric. Overloading leads to broken belts and noisy, worn drum bearings.
5. Clean Moisture Sensor Bars
Modern sensor dryers have two curved stainless steel strips inside the drum near the lint filter that detect residual moisture in fabrics. Fabric softener residue can form an invisible coating over these sensor bars, causing the dryer to shut off prematurely while clothes are still damp. Wipe the metal strips with rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad monthly.
