1. The Flame Color Safety Test: Blue vs. Yellow
A healthy gas burner produces a steady, crisp blue flame with a distinct inner cone, indicating complete, efficient combustion. If your burners produce a floppy yellow or orange flame, the air-to-fuel ratio is incorrect or burner ports are clogged, resulting in incomplete combustion, soot accumulation, and hazardous carbon monoxide release. Turn off the burner and have it professionally serviced.
2. How to Detect and Respond to a Gas Leak
Gas companies add an artificial sulfur/rotten-egg odor (mercaptan) to gas supplies so leaks are detected immediately. If you smell gas:
- DO NOT turn on or off any electrical switches, light switches, or range hoods (electrical arcing can ignite gas).
- DO NOT light matches or smoke.
- Immediately shut off the main gas cylinder valve or wall shutoff valve.
- Open all kitchen windows and doors to ventilate the area.
- Evacuate and call emergency gas cooker repair from outside the property.
3. Inspect Flexible Gas Hoses & Regulators Annually
Rubber gas hoses in Dubai can dry out, harden, and develop microscopic cracks over time due to heat and ambient humidity. Check the expiry date printed along your orange or black gas hose. Hoses should be replaced every 2 to 3 years, and gas regulators should be inspected annually.
4. Keep Burner Caps and Injector Jets Free of Grease
Boiled-over soups, cooking oils, and grease can clog the tiny brass gas injector nozzles located beneath each burner crown. Clean burner caps regularly with warm water and degreasing soap. Never use wooden toothpicks to clean brass jets, as broken wood can permanently obstruct gas channels.
5. Understand Flame Failure Safety Devices (FFDs)
All modern gas cookers in the UAE are legally required to feature Flame Failure Devices (thermocouples). The thermocouple sits next to the burner flame and senses heat. If a gust of wind or liquid spill extinguishes the flame, the thermocouple cools down and automatically cuts off the gas supply within seconds to prevent dangerous gas accumulation.
